Perth Cultural Centre Rejuvenation Project

The Perth Cultural Centre (PCC) has been known as a place where visitors and tourists gather to explore and expand their creativity, celebrate diversity, acknowledge the past and dream of the future.

This important heritage precinct is about to take the next step towards an exciting future – rejuvenation of the cultural space.

The $35 million project is being funded jointly by the State Government, with a $25 million contribution, and the Australian Government, with a $10 million contribution, as part of the $1.5 billion Perth City Deal.

In early June 2023, a tender request was released for a main works contractor to finalise the design and redevelop the new space, marking a major milestone in the project.

Ongoing, constructive and meaningful engagement with a wide range of stakeholders and community has occurred over the last 18 months. These have included other key government agencies, a Whadjuk Elder Reference Group, community members, arts and culture institutions and commercial tenants.

Detailed design work will continue once the main works contractor is appointed and the redevelopment will have a family friendly approach with green scaping and more shaded areas, better lighting and improved security. Works will also include demolition of the amphitheatre and the eastern Art Gallery of WA car park and creation of a more accessible streetscape, better connecting Beaufort Street to William Street.

Once designs are approved, they will be shared with the public.

Construction is expected to begin in 2024. Minimising the disruption to surrounding areas and businesses is a key project priority and notices regarding this will be provided directly to those nearby.

This is the first major upgrade to the precinct in more than 10 years and the rejuvenation of the area represents three years of planning and consultation. The outcome will benefit generations of Western Australians to come.
